artist statement
My painting involves appropriating and manipulating familiar objects in order to challenge recognition and interpretation. I am interested in the vulnerability of the objects legacy, as they are open to intervention and transformation. As objects are transformed their constant properties are undermined and their installation within specific sites can further accentuate the ambiguity charging these 'art-objects' with multiple possibilities, encouraging a suspension of disbelief.
I see the determination of the artistic vision and the public reception of the artist's work as an ongoing dialogue, one that is in flux and is at times problematic as it might be misinterpreted; the work I do explores different ways of provoking both arts connoisseurs and general audiences to play out this dialogue on equal terms. I also aim to convey that the appearance of the artwork can be based on arbitrary decisions that are ultimately given their credence and consequence by the viewer and that fleeting judgements of taste can also determine engagement whilst altering perspectives upon the past (acknowledging this urges me to constantly tinker with the style and the presentation of my work).

ArtSceneToday Q&A
|
Q: Where do you see yourself in the art scene today?
A: An emerging, early-career artist/curator currently based in Liverpool UK.
Q: What is in your inspiration?
A: The alchemical nature of art practices such as painting and sculpture, and questioning the elevated role art often plays in expressing social needs and meeting moral challenges.
Q: What are your challenges?
A: To stay warm and feed myself, working in ridiculous jobs that I hate.
Q: How did you/do you choose your medium?
A: My medium can often change, I often choose particular mediums or specialisms on an arbritrary basis.
Q: Which artist has influenced you the most?
A: Blinky Pallermo, not always sure why because he died before influencing how his work has been contextualised; but I like a playful and vague approach influenced by painterly expression.
