artist statement
My work is symbolic and conceptual. The painting "Mother" is about the relationship between my mother and I. Instead of painting a strait forward portrait of my mother, I was more interested in the creation of a portrait using elements that inform the viewer through symbols that reflect the subject's personality. The black shape represents the never changing hairstyle that my mother has kept my entire life. Her never changing hairstyle reflects her never changing ideals, and overall stubbornness. The white line represents my mother's white hair. Her white hair comes from worrying about my younger sister, her company and me. The white line come to form my school bag, my sister's backpack, and my mother's heavy roll away suitcase that she takes to work everyday.
