artist statement

We are all creative beings, artists. Every one of us has the innate desire to express what is inside of us. Creating art is my way down the rabbit hole, my salvation. Bold colors and unique textures consistently find their way into my work. I believe the true photographer moves to get the shot, they do not wait for the shot to ‘happen’, they make it happen.

I am a ‘colorist’ at heart and thrive when playing with color in my abstract works.  My photography works focus mainly on nature, the intricate textures, shapes and shadows she creates on her own. I shoot those images, always thinking of what it can ‘become’. I then twist and tweak them to make them my own ‘nature photographic abstractions’. Sometimes you can see the original image and sometimes not, it all depends on where the muse takes me.

This particular piece, GREEN LEEK ABSTRACT, began life as a ‘straight’ photograph of a Leek plant in full bloom. The texture and colors drew me in immediately. I love the color green and simply knew I had to make this into one of my unique nature abstractions. Green represents so many things to so many people ~ rebirth, Spring, newness, and all of nature,  it just felt fitting to focus on this color overall. This was one of my first all-green abstracts.

I think of this medium as working with Mother Nature, rather than against her.

Linnea Tober grew up in the small, seaside town of Monmouth Beach, NJ and recently moved to the quaint little town of Havre de Grace, MD.

While Linnea enjoyed working with paint and mixed-media for years, focusing on women, their mystery and beauty; she works extensively in photography as of late; focusing specifically on nature and digital photographic abstractions. Ms. Tober has been pleasantly surprised by her passion and comfort level working within these various mediums, as well as the positive response from her many fans and collectors. She adores the thrill of her ‘digital paintings’; the way she can play with color and movement, her two favorite elements. Her photographic process is a bit out-of-the-ordinary as compared to other photographers. Since Linnea has trained as a painter first and foremost, her main concern when photographing is the arrangement of color, how they interact and play off of one another. She is always thinking of what her photos can be transformed into….colors, textures, shadows; she is consistently creating visuals in her mind as she photographs her nature subjects. It is this artistic way of thinking that allows her to create her unique, flowing, organic and vibrant ‘nature photographic abstractions’. Ms. Tober strives for a painterly outcome in her digital abstractions and, based on the responses from her collectors and admirers alike, she has indeed achieved this success. Her work is often heard being discussed in galleries by viewers with such questions as, “That was a photograph?” and “What was it to begin with and how does she do that?”

Linnea feels it is critical, as an artist, to give back to the community and has been involved in a variety of socially engaged projects since beginning her artistic career. Some of the her most recent ones being the Mid-State Arts Resource Team (MART) Sharks for the Arts project, which supported arts funding and research, The Healing Power of Art show at The Guild of Creative Arts in Shrewsbury, which supported women’s cancer education (both 2010 and 2011), The Ft. Monmouth Women’s Day program, fostering education in women’s history; a solo show at the Red Horse Gallery, in the Freehold Raceway Mall to raise awareness for Celiac Disease, in 2010. Her work was in the Belmar, NJ Surf Art show, a benefit for the Hannah Pro; providing assistance to young women struggling with drug addictions. She has had artwork auctioned for breast cancer awareness/research in the Atlantic Highlands, NJ (Sep 2011) and at an art auction for the Mental Health Association in Red Bank, NJ (Oct 2011). Most recently, Linnea has donated several pieces for various benefits and fundraisers for the victims of super storm Sandy, of which her family and hometown of Monmouth Beach, NJ suffered much loss.

Ms. Tober attended Brookdale Community College and received her AA in elementary education as well as a graphic design certification, she then moved on to Kean University where she received her BA in Art History/Fine Art and most recently graduated from Monmouth University with her MAT in Art Education. Her dream is to one day teach secondary art (another one of her passions), to run her own gallery and allow her work to be accessible to ALL.

She has exhibited extensively throughout the country in juried shows at such places as the Monmouth Museum, Lincroft, NJ; the Monmouth Festival of the Arts, Tinton Falls, NJ; Gallery 13, Asbury Park, NJ; the Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts, Asbury Park, NJ; Studio 2 Gallery, Austin, Texas; Still Point Art Gallery (on-line); Parachute Factory Gallery, New Haven, CT; LACDA, Los Angeles Center for Visual Art, and the SOHO gallery for digital art, NYC.

Linnea’s work was selected for The Peace Project, which traveled from Gallery 9, in L.A., to the Meridian Gallery, San Diego and Max Lang Gallery, New York. Jurors included Sylvia Laudien, of the Guggenheim and MoMA, and Karen Blessing, Pulitzer Prize winning illustrator of “Peace One Day”- (Sep- Nov 2010)*. Her photography work was accepted into the Ocean County Arts Guilds Annual Juried Photography Show, where the Juror was Bonnie Stutski’s, the Senior Photography Editor for Smithsonian Magazine. Her abstract work was accepted into the Visual Arts Center of NJ’s 25th International Juried Show, juried by Joan Young, Associate Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Her work was accepted into the show “Energy’ at the Ocean County Center for Contemporary Art, Santa Ana, CA; juried by Howard Fox, Emeritus curator of contemporary art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Linnea’s work was selected in February for the 2012 Inaugural Windsor-Whitney Biennial show juried by the one and only “Sucklord” from the Bravo TV show ‘Work of Art: The Next Great Artist” and the ‘Petroleum Paradox’ show, Denise Bibro Fine Art, NY, NY; juried by Eleanor Heartney, Contributing Editor to Art in America and Artpress; Artnews, Art and Auction, The New Art Examiner, the Washington Post and the New York Times. Miss Tober’s work was selected for a juried show at The Kinsey Institute’s for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction in the Grunwald Gallery of Art, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, juried by Louise Lippincott, Chief Curator at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, Betsy Stirratt, Director of the Grunwald Gallery, and Catherine Johnson-Roehr, Curator of Art, Artifacts and Photographs at The Kinsey Institute, and most recently the Gallery at 14 Maples, “Giving Voice” show, in conjunction with the Dodge Poetry festival, Arts Council of Morris County, Morristown, NJ; juried by Margaret O’Reilly, Curator of Fine Art at the New Jersey State Museum; as well as the AnnMarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center show, “Glitz-art that sparkles” show, Dowell, MD, juried by  Carrie Patterson, Associate Professor & Department Chair, Department of ART & Art History, St. Mary’s Coll. Of MD; Sally Otis, Coordinator, Videoconference Education Program, Smithsonian American Art Museum.  Her work was chosen for the Art Takes Times Square international competition, where selected artists works were shown on LED billboards throughout Times Square, as well as Art Takes Miami, both international competitions.
