artist statement

As each piece is very personal, an unconscious self-portrait tends to be the end result. Themes of urban life intertwine with the wild and abstract, effectively blurring what is and isn't real. My spontaneous process leaves the final image a unique vision, unobstructed by preconceived thoughts or ideas concerning how or why something should be. 

Growing up in NYC and having the opportunity to travel bring about a reoccurrence of excess and chaos in my work. Along with working on canvases of all sizes, I use found objects layered with different mediums to achieve this. Being self-taught allows me to create instinctively, and it removes me from the norm. 

Cityscapes was a perfect theme for me to enter “Untitled” as this piece includes photos I have taken in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Montevideo, Uruguay, Austin, TX and Los Angeles, CA. With these images I was able to set pieces of these amazing cities to a surrealist backdrop ultimately creating my own unique Cityscape.

Artist and photographer Michelle Golden was born and raised in New York City. She is self-taught and creates using mixed media and a process that is both organic and without premeditation. 

Although Michelle has been artistically creating for many years, she has only just begun to share her work. Most recently she participated in “Square Exhibition” at Space Womb Gallery in Long Island City, NY.
