artist statement

In the 1990’s, I sat myself down in front of the television and consumed a large quantity of cartoons. The quirky and anthropomorphic imagery imbeded itself in my mind. In more recent times my Midwestern upbringing and my occupation as a bartender has kept me around alcohol. I began to work these two influences together through painting allowing me to use contorted perspectives and infuse strange narratives that reflect myself and some of the common Midwestern experiences.

art scene today Q & A

Q: Where do you see yourself in the art scene today?
A: Trying to progress my work while making a mix of fine art and consumer goods.

Q: What is in your inspiration?
A:  Much of my inspiration comes from common life, whether it’s a personal issue I’ve been working through or an interaction I’ve experienced.

Q: What are your challenges?
A:  Working in a town that has a fairly minimal art scene has proven to be an ongoing challenge. If the scene isn't there then you have to make one or move out.

Q: How did you/do you choose your medium?
A:  My medium tends to come from what’s available and reasonable.

Q: Which artist has influenced you the most?
A: Phillip Guston has been a main influence as far as the fine art world goes, but recently I have really enjoyed the writings of Jenny Lawson and Allie Borsch.
