artist statement

In its doing, knitting records a reflective thought processing; therefore knitted yarn can be seen to carry both memory and narrative.

This season’s knitted models are the garden’s fruit and vegetables. Garden Salad’ features these knits occupying remaining jars as way to preserve recordings of time spent knitting left over fruits and vegetables - while at the same time keeping eye on timing, temperature and boiling pace in the processing of bottled jars.

By hanging these jars of knitted produce in the very trees of the garden they grew from, I am bringing home and giving recorded view to a window of time too easily blinded by product.

Preserving produce is a process consisting of intensive labour, timing and chemistry that works on grounds of appreciation and respect. This relationship with the garden is a bitter sweet responsibility and celebratory response to another year’s love and nurturing.

In comparison to the melancholic nature of mainstream preserves, often consumed over winter months, ‘Garden Salad’s’ preserved message sends a never-ending summer.

To me this work Garden Salad is a WOMANifesto.  Like seasonal cycles of a garden, this work reveals nature of its past, present and on-going intention.

bio

Born in Victoria and raised in South Australia, Christina grew up amid the active art scene of the late 1960’s and 70’s.  Early childhood coloring-in books (Disney were the best), evolved into drawing and at 7 years of age she was selling her drawings for 20 cents for feature of her works on admirer’s fridges.

In her 20’s she achieved her Certificate of Art, followed by her BA of Visual Arts, Uni SA. Many years of arts practice saw brief teaching jobs, commission work, experimental art installation exhibitions – both outside and in mainstream, and community contribution.

In 2009 Christina was accepted into RMIT’S Master of Fine Art Program in Melbourne, Australia of which has confirmed for her that being an outsider is not a bad thing!
