artist statement

The images come to me through mindfulness and intuition. They are living inside me. As I paint, I let them out and allow them to evolve. This process of art is therapeutic because it gives me inspiration to reinvent and recreate myself.

While I was working on this piece, I was thinking of the threat of global warming on our ecosystem and those who are suffering around the world.

 


artist bio

Paulina Đàm is a self-taught artist. She works with acrylic, pastel, and mixed media on canvas and wood. Paulina's style varies from abstract expressionism to surrealism, as she explores new techniques and keeps challenging herself. Born in 1962 in Saigon, Vietnam. Arrived in the U.S. as a refugee, Paulina had to give up art under family pressure to pursue a career in accounting. The year 2017 marks her comeback for the first time after more than two decades.

Q: Where do you see yourself in the art scene today?

A: Like everyone, I sometimes encounter self-doubt and loneliness. This award means a whole lot to me. I am looking forward to experimenting sculpture and installation in the future.    

Q: What is in your inspiration?
A:  My loved ones who always believe in me, no matter what.
 
Q: What are your challenges?
A:  I started late and am running out of time.
  
Q: How did you/do you choose your medium?
A:  I feel comfortable exploring new techniques with these materials.
  
Q: Which artist has influenced you the most?
A: Wilfredo Lam and Salvador Dali and many contemporary women artists.
